USC football: Rocky Seto not retained by Lane... →
Meh.
Wish him the very best. Hope he sneaks up to Seattle.
ETA: I’d trade Rocky Seto to Pete Carroll in exchange for strength & conditioning coach Chris Carlisle. If I was playing USCopoly or the like.

ESPN The Magazine’s Rick Reilly thinks Warner’s leaning heavily towards retirement, and agrees it’s a good time to walk away:
“What’s left to prove? He’s been MVP twice. He’s played in three Super Bowls. Won one. Been Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year. Set several all-time postseason NFL passing records. His story — the Hy-Vee grocery stocker who...
Peter King's MMQB Killed It This Week - SI.com →
“The moment I liked most from the weekend happened Sunday night, in the bowels of Qualcomm Stadium, where Marty Schottenheimer had coached the Chargers for five seasons, and where he shockingly was fired after going 14-2 and losing an opening playoff game. Marty’s boy, Brian, the offensive coordinator of the Jets, had just done his part Sunday orchestrating an offense with a rookie...

Why are Vols fans surprised? →
Adam Krohn of The Daily Citizen in Dalton, GA thinks anyone shocked by Lane Kiffin’s speedy departure to USC is an idiot and/or not paying attention, that UT had it coming to them when it hired him, and that things just got a whole lot worse now that they turned everything over to Derek Dooley, whose creds might be even more suspect than LK. Nice going, Vols.

“I think USC fans are so loyal to the program and they’ll be patient. This is a lifestyle for them. They’ll say, ‘Hey, we’re with you whoever you are.’ They’re loyal and they’re going to be willing to go along with you.

With this kind of spin, Kiffin will be just fine -... →
“Kiffin came off as a lightweight. He has a degree in Leisure Service Management from Fresno State, and he wears his collars a half-size too big. Still, I can’t blame the guy. USC is his dream job, for sure, and it probably wasn’t coming around again. He didn’t break a contract. If the old college try now lasts a total of 14 months, so be it. College football has the guy it deserves....

A highlight from ESPN’s Gene Wojciechowski’s loooong list (for USC fans & ND haters):

“After all, he offers (along with two national championship rings) unique motivational skills, a sharp football mind, experience in high pressure games and established connections to some of the best coaches at all levels of the game. ESPN’s Pac-10 blogger Ted Miller paints a much more promising picture of the USC football program’s future.
He says that 1) the sanctions won’t be as crippling as many USC fans/haters fear/hope and 2) as far as someone replacing Carroll, the timing’s actually pretty darn good.
He points out that Alabama was penalized for much more severe violations that USC will likely...
Where is AD during scandals at USC? PE.com →
From the Press-Enterprise: “Institutional control” is heard repeatedly when schools are disciplined for violations. Yes, it’s hard work keeping up with hundreds of student athletes and what they’re doing when they’re away from the field or the court, but that’s why athletic departments have compliance offices. Ultimately, it is the athletic director who is...
Recruit Jordan Zumwalt’s interest in USC fading -... →
1. So what? Jordan Zumwalt has already committed to Stanford.
2. You can always use more awesome recruits. Hire Jim Harbaugh as the new head coach (I know, I was 115% against this when someone suggested it over the weekend but….I’m lookin’ at our options, and I’m not seeing anything I like a whole lot better…) and then Zumwalt will likely follow. And done.

“Either Carroll is coming to the NFL without the full control he previously said was a prerequisite for making the jump back to the NFL or the Seahawks are going to hedge on the commitments made to the Fritz Pollard Alliance to secure an interview with Leslie Frazier, Vikings defensive coordinator. “We have been hearing quite a bit of chatter throughout the day today that [Mike] Garrett could be on his way out as the Trojans’ director of athletics. Questions all over about Carroll - The OC Register →

“My review of Pete Carroll can be summed up in 10 words: He’s the reason I care at all about college football.”
While I wouldn’t go quite as far as Keri, I will say that if it were not for the USC Trojans - under Carroll, with some Matt Leinart thrown in - I would not be as obsessed with the entire sport of college football as I am.
And though I doubt too many people...
Seahawks Job Might Not Be All Pete Thought It... →
SI.com’s Peter King says the Carroll to Seattle deal isn’t quite done…and that the end product will probably not be what Pete really wanted, which was a head coaching position with total personnel control.

Sources: Carroll wants Chow, not Bates, with him →
Anyone in their right mind should want Norm Chow instead of Jeremy Bates. Norm Chow has a solid track record at successfully running an offense.
Granted, I’m not entirely certain Pete Carroll’s in his right mind (Seattle over Southern Cal? Nahhhhhh), and I’ll think he’s really nuts if he thinks he’s going to get Norm Chow to follow him to Starbucks-land. Didn’t...

“The facts are so strong against this decision…..
Sorry, just had a flashback to a year ago this time, when Pete Carroll was strongly advising Mark Sanchez not to turn pro, not to make tens of millions, not to launch his NFL career. Sanchez and Carroll are both in play right now, apparently. Sanchez is in the NFL playoffs, although the New York Jets largely carried him there, and Carroll is...

CONGRATS TO 2009 BCS NATIONAL CHAMPION ALABAMA!!!!
So happy for the Crimson Tide fans.
Honest-to-God heartbroken for Colt McCoy. If you watched his postgame interview and didn’t feel for the guy, I’m not sure exactly what you have running through your veins.
Also, my sister is blaming me and my blog earlier today for his misfortune. He did not, however, cry Tebow tears. And I’m glad because that would’ve made me feel even...
